In Literature,
we have read fairy tales, studied their
characteristics, and written our
own fairy tales.We
have
printed out these tales on pages we bind in
books, with batik covers we created, and
illustrated each page in various styles and mediums.
We also had much fun designing an illuminated
letter.
You can see
some of our illuminated letters
by clicking here.
We have also
read Cricket in Times Square and saw the novel performed at
the Seattle Children's Theatre.
We saw Cyrano at the SCT also,
and will be viewing The Book of Ruth.
We will be
studying the works of Beverly Cleary and Judy Blume,
reading a biography in preparation of the Festival of the Famous,
reading about why and how authors write,
and looking at humor in books.
I went to a 7-11
and asked for a 2x4 and a box of
3x5's.
The clerk said, "ten-four."
Steven
Wright:
In Math, we
have spent much time learning how to
solve problems and how to explain our solutions and thinking.
We have learned the metric system to help us in our
science investigations. We adopted NFL teams and
watched their progress as we predicted, graphed, kept data and
statistics, mapped, andresearched the NFL cities.
We are learning geometry and will spend more time on
probability. Third graders are learning multiplication
and all students are memorizing basic facts to
help them gain power in math. Everyday, we make an attendance
graph and analyze the data, deciding if we are a typical
sample. We take many surveys and we are building information
about an"average student." You can see some results
of our average student work by clicking here.
We spend much of our time in mathematical pursuits and
investigations.
"There is a
single light of science,
and to brighten it anywhere is to brighten it everywhere."
-Isaac Asimov
In science, we
have explored and applied process skills,
especially observation, inference, and measurement.
We have studied the properties of water. We will be looking at
the circulatory and nervous system as part of our
two year study of the human body. Each year we have fun
in Design Tech. We will have fun in outdoor education in our
3-day trip to Camp Orkilla in May.
In social studies, we have concentrated on the geography of
Washington state and our local areas. We have
made scale model, 3-D maps of Washington. We are gathering
information about communities. Our trip to Camp Orkilla
helps us understand even more about the
geography and history of our state.
We
participated in a collaborate project on the 'Net
in which we predicted the weight of apples,
and weighed unpeeled, peeled, and chopped versions
for a week to observe water loss. We reported our
results to the web page and found out
page posted there - fun! We are also going to
ask other students across the country some of our
Average Student questions. Hmmm..who is the most
"average" anyway?!
